Description: The form of popular culture whose antipodean expression has remained most hidden in both national stories is, ironically, the most high-profile activity between the two countries: sport. In the grand national narratives any sign of a common Tasman history in general, let alone in sport, is studiously ignored. Sport was rarely given a place in earlier histories but in recent years has gained space as a key outgrowth of colonial and subsequently national communities. Sport is now recognised as the engine of masculinity, harnessed to the disciplinary rituals, intense competition, and cadet militarism generated by boys' schools. The middle-class private schools of the Tasman world shared this 'moral curriculum' in particular. This common basis generated an early community of interest and both countries gained international credibility in sport by first playing together as 'Australasia'.
